Jesus Wept

John 11:35 Jesus wept.

We all have heard how this is the shortest verse in the Bible, we learned it as children. But have we given much thought to what it is in reference to? It is when Jesus learns that His dear friend Lazarus had died. Even though Jesus knew that He was going to bring glory and honor to His Father in Heaven by raising Lazarus from the dead. The fact that His friend had died still hurt Jesus and Lazarus’ sisters, He wept because He loved them. He had told the disciples earlier in verse 11 “Our friend Lazarus sleeps. But I go so that I may awaken him out of sleep”.

When Martha met Jesus on the road to their home she said that if Jesus had been there then her brother would not have died. John 11:25 Jesus said to her, I am the Resurrection and the Life! He who believes in Me, though he die, yet he shall live.

John 11:41-45 Then they took away the stone where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. And I know that You hear Me always, but because of the people who stand by I said it, so that they may believe that You have sent Me. And saying these things, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, Here! Outside! And he who had died came out, bound hand and foot with sheets, and his face was bound with a cloth. Jesus said to them, Untie him and let him go! Then many of the Jews who came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on Him.

Father, Thank You for this beautiful story that teaches us of Your awesome power and glory. We pray for all of those who have lost loved ones and for their peace. In Jesus’ name. Amen
