Who Is My Neighbor?
Luke 10:29-37 But he, willing to justify himself, said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor? And answering, Jesus said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among robbers, who stripped him of his clothing and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by coincidence a certain priest came down that way and seeing him, he passed by on the opposite side. And in the same way a Levite, also being at the place, coming and seeing him, he passed on the opposite side. But a certain traveling Samaritan came upon him, and seeing him, he was filled with pity. And coming near, he bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine, and set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And going on the next day, he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, Take care of him. And whatever more you spend, when I come again I will repay you. Then which of these three, do you think, was neighbor to him who fell among the robbers? And he said, The one doing the deed of mercy to him. And Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise.
AAAaaah The Good Samaritan, what child has not heard this story? We all heard it growing up didn’t we? But yet, now that we are “all grown up” do we remember the lesson learned? I wonder sometimes because we turn away, don’t want to get involved, it is their problem – I have enough of my own, they brought it on themselves or let them pull themselves up by the boot straps like I did. It is really a sad statement about our world today, but it is a true statement for many, many people.
Have we forgotten who our neighbors are? Are we to busy trying to get ahead to worry about them? When was the last time you did something nice for someone, I meant without wanting anything in return and no "pat on the back" from others for doing it? I am ashamed to say that it has been a while for me. But I can remedy that easily can’t I, and so can you. Let’s get out there and do something nice – anything nice, let’s just do it!
Father, Please forgive us for forgetting about our neighbors. Help us to remember and follow the good lessons we learned as children in Your Bible Stories. In Jesus’ name. Amen
